Farm Fresh Initiative
The high market prices of fresh produce, the relative scarcity of stores that sell it in low-income neighborhoods, the soaring obesity rates that result, and obesity’s harmful health consequences are the powerful motivating forces that drives the Farm Fresh initiative. Why should some families be forced to compromise their health and eat unwholesome foods simply because it is the only affordable option?
This innovative program addresses this question by providing families with choices. Healthy, fresh, vegetables are made accessible to low-income neighborhoods through a weekly distribution of fresh foods to neighborhood soup kitchens and food pantries and a mixed-income Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program that accepts food stamps and a variety of personalized payment options.
