Advocates Call Sequestration Infant Nutrition Cuts Immoral and Counterproductive

Statement from New York City Coalition Against Hunger Executive Director Joel Berg

“The New York City Coalition Against Hunger strongly supports the plan laid out by President Obama today to avoid devastating cuts which would threaten hundreds of thousands of jobs, cut vital services for children, seniors, people with mental illness and our men and women in uniform. If no action is taken, 600,000 people will be cut from the WIC (Women, Infants & Children) program. It is both counterproductive and immoral to reduce the budget by literally taking milk away from low-income pregnant woman and their children, instead of closing tax loopholes. Not only does this send a shameful message about our nation’s values, it will cost us far more in long-term health spending than it will ever save.

Congress must act to prevent this devastation and President Obama’s common sense plan to cut spending, reform entitlements and reform the tax code in a way that is balanced and fair makes sense for the vast majority of hard working Americans.”

Of course you recall Obama in a November 2011 speech promoting sequestration and warning republicans that if they tried to circumvent it, he would veto any such legislation
