New York Times Endorses Gillibrand Amendment; Opposes Cuts to SNAP/Food Stamps in Farm Bill

Yesterday, the New York Times Editorial Board endorsed an amendment proposed by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand to restore funding to SNAP/food stamps in the Farm Bill.

The amendment "lowering the subsidies to highly profitable crop insurance companies to avoid any trims in the food-stamp program." NYCCAH wholly supports this measure and commends the New York Times to giving voice to the hundreds of thousands of low-income households who stand to lose benefits to buy food.

The Farm Bill is now in a critical stage on the Senate Agriculture committee, with special interests jockeying to ensure their legislation see itself into the final draft.

"It is not yet clear which of the hundreds of pending farm bill amendments will receive a vote. Senator Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, should make sure that the Gillibrand amendment gets one, and then he must rally Senate Democrats to pass it.
