The recently appointed CEO of Kraft Food, the world’s third largest food and beverage company, has publicly announced their stance against the pending cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)/Food Stamps. To date, 47 million Americans rely on the SNAP program.

Data released by the U.S. Census Bureau today states that the national 2011 poverty rate is 15% or 46.2 million Americans are currently living in poverty.
More specifically, the number of New York State residents living below the poverty line, $17,916 for a family of 3, increased 6% from 2008-2011, according to new federal Census data released today. More than 3.1 million state residents – 1 in 6 – now live in poverty.

Today, the New York City Council will vote on two resolutions regarding breakfast in the classroom. One resolution calls on the Mayor to mandate breakfast in the classroom in every classroom at all public schools. If the Mayor fails to act, the second resolution calls on the state legislature to mandate the program. Currently, two-thirds of the kids eating lunch in New York City schools do not get breakfast at school.
