The 9th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Serve-A-Thon brought out hundreds of volunteers yesterday to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King through community service activities.
Organized by the New York City Coalition Against Hunger, Serve-A-Thon events included Breakfast in the Classroom outreach, public art projects, food stamps screenings and enrollment assistance at supermarkets, and general-improvement efforts at emergency food programs throughout the five boroughs.

In the wake of Governor Cuomo's announcement he would end the practice of finger-imaging food stamps applicants, the Times took a good look at the stigma attached to this shameful and wasteful rule.

A Living Wage, Long Overdue

New York City provides hundreds of millions of dollars a year in taxpayer-financed subsidies to private developers. It is only right that the jobs created by those projects pay a decent wage. The Fair Wages for New Yorkers Act, widely known as the living-wage bill, would nudge these employers in the right direction.
