Recent Achievements:
- Helped 30 agencies increase their food stamps outreach work, contributing to a 104,167-person increase in Food Stamp Program participation in the last year.
- Started seven neighborhood networks, which engaged food pantries and soup kitchens in joint efforts to harmonize their hours, coordinate their services, and begin launching new programs to provide more food and enable more of their clients to move towards long-term self-sufficiency.
- Sponsored four 14-person AmeriCorps*VISTA teams that helped pantries and kitchens recruit volunteers, earn grants, and upgrade technical operations.
- Recruited over 200 volunteers for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Serve-a-Thon event in January 2006 and continued regular volunteer placements year-round.
- Provided computer hardware and/or software and computer training to over 20 pantries and kitchens and provided financial management training and software to seven pantries and kitchens.
- Sponsored a workshop on summer meals and after-school snacks attended by over 80 individuals from faith-based and community organizations across the city.
- Obtained widespread media coverage of hunger trends in newspapers, television, and radio, leading more funders and government officials to pay attention to the problem of hunger.
- Conducted and released the city's most comprehensive annual survey on soup kitchens and food pantries and hunger in New York City.
