The Child Development Support Corporation, which provides social services to low income residents of central Brooklyn, needs volunteers to reorganize and clean rooms as preparation for the expansion of the organization’s food pantry services. The volunteer project will begin at 10:00am Saturday January 16th 2010 and is expected to finish at 3:00pm.Volunteers should wear clothes that can get dirty.

15 volunteers are needed to serve breakfast and assist with clean-up afterwards on Saturday Jan. 16 2010. Volunteers should arrive at 8:30 am and plan to stay until noon. Father’s Heart Ministries seeks to fight poverty and domestic violence by empowering individuals and families to support themselves and “get off the food line.” Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older.

Greenpoint Reformed Church Hunger Program - FULL

Greenpoint Reformed Church is a non-sectarian emergency food program with a mission to ensure no persons die of hunger in North Brooklyn. Volunteers are needed from 10:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday January 16, 2010 for a variety of services including help with accounting, electrical work, plumbing, minor gardening, and painting. The program is also in need of Polish speaking volunteers to help communicate with Polish speaking clients.

Jan Hus Homeless Outreach and Advocacy - FULL

The Jan Hus Homeless Outreach and Advocacy program assists over 50 low income New Yorkers a week with immediate needs such as toiletries, a food pantry, undergarments, and clothing. The program also has a weekly meal that serves over 100 guests. Jan Hus needs volunteers to help convert a room in the church into a facility for clothing outreach and a computer lab for clients. Help is also needed to sort and fold donated clothes and to organize and clean the kitchen. The project will span the entire MLK weekend, January 16-18 2010, from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Some tasks may include heavy lifting and stairs but there are less physical tasks available as well.

South Bronx Cooperative - SUNDAY - FULL

The mission of the South Bronx Food Cooperative is to provide affordable and nutritious food to all residents of the South Bronx and New York City while empowering the local community by encouraging good health, providing relevant job skills and fostering environmentally responsible activities through democratic cooperation. Volunteers are needed to save the South Bronx Co-op by canvassing the neighborhood and spreading information regarding the Co-ops mission and sustainable food practices. A plumber is also needed to help finish the installation of a juice bar. The project will take place Saturday January 16th and Sunday January 17th of MLK weekend from 11:00am to 8:00pm.

The OPIN Soup Kitchen is an organization that offers hot nutritional meals to the hungry in Brownsville, Ocean Hill, and neighboring communities in Brooklyn. The organization needs volunteers to assist with a thorough cleaning, reorganizing, and painting of both their soup kitchen and food pantry facilities. The project will begin at 11:00am on Saturday January 16th 2010, and is expected to finish at 4:00pm.

MCCNY Charities operates the Sylvia Rivera Food Pantry and seeks to address disparities in social service access as well as provide a safe space for the LGBTQ community. Volunteers are needed to help paint the pantry space, entryway, and stairway of the MCCNY Charity space. The painting will take place Saturday January 16th from 10:00am to 4:00pm and volunteers are encouraged to wear clothes they do not mind getting paint on.

Mt. Zion Feeding Program

Mt. Zion Feeding Program is an organization that is committed to providing some of the most basic needs of those living in surrounding communities by supplying individuals in the community with food packages, with new and gently used clothing, Access NYC Benefits screening, as well counseling on an as needed basis. These individuals are predominantly able-bodied adults who through current economic hardships are not able to gain adequate employment to cover all of their living expenses. Volunteers are needed to upgrade and revitalize the pantry by completing inventory, cleaning the pantry, reorganizing the pantry, and possibly installing all new shelving around the perimeter of the pantry.

The Nourishing Kitchen is a community food program and nutritional education center located in East Harlem. Their mission statement is “nutrition for all,” a goal they strive to reach through programs including: nutritionally based free hot meals, hands on culinary and nutritional training, and community outreach and advocacy. The Nourishing kitchen is requesting Spanish speaking volunteers to help make and distribute bilingual signs and flyers around East Harlem to spread awareness about the Nourishing Kitchen’s mission. A volunteer is also needed with an interest in graphic design to help make promotional materials. All volunteers are needed on MLK Monday January 18th 2010.

Church of St. Francis Xavier—Xavier Mission - FULL

The Church of St. Francis Xavier-Mission serves low-income, working, and homeless individuals through community outreach programs including a weekly soup kitchen, a monthly food pantry, a men’s shelter 6 nights a week, a Life-Skills Training & Empowerment Program, and a weekly clothing room. Volunteers are needed Sunday January 17th 2010 to assist with food and clothing distribution as well as help with the soup kitchen clean-up. Volunteers should arrive at 8:30am and should expect to be finished by 3:30pm.

The Carver Houses Res Association seeks to make sure no one goes hungry by trying to feed as many people as they can and by informing their clients of rights and benefits they are eligible for. They are in need of direct service volunteers from 9 am - 1 pm to help distribute pantry bags to their clients.

The River Fund New York is an organization that serves the homeless, the working poor, as well as children and seniors in need by providing social services such as food stamp benefits, housing assistance, and legal help. Volunteers are needed to help prepare and distribute sandwiches and take part in benefits outreach from 8:00am to 12:30pm on January 16th 2010. Some volunteers may be outside so warm clothing is encouraged.

Cathedral of Joy CDC - MONDAY, FULL

The Cathedral of Joy CDC needs help distributing brochures about their mission and services around the community. The Cathedral of Joy CDC seeks to provide humanitarian services to support and assist the community’s residents who are below the poverty level. Volunteers are also needed to help paint and organize the pantry rooms. The projects will last the entire MLK weekend from Saturday, January 16 and Monday, January 18th 2010 from 11:30 am - 4:00 pm.

Flatbush Reformed Church operates a weekly food pantry that serves over 100 people and a soup kitchen on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Volunteers are needed on Saturday January 16th 2010 to help prepare and serve food in both the pantry and soup kitchen.

Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church

Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church is both a soup kitchen and a food pantry and serves a large clientele with various needs by giving out used and new clothes and referrals. Volunteers are needed on MLK Monday January 18th, 2010 to help organize physical and electronic files, to help organize the clothing room, and to help prepare a presentation to city council to acquire discretionary funds.

Union United Methodist Church

Union United Methodist Church is a faith based non-profit community church that provides services to the South Ozone Park population including seniors, young adults, incarcerated teens, and young mothers with babies. Services include providing clothes, free computer lessons, and a free tutoring program. Volunteers are needed Saturday January 16th, 2010 at 9:00am to paint and reorganize the pantry space. Volunteers are also needed to fold, to organize, and to label clothes.

Volunteers are needed for a Fundraising Dinner on Saturday 16th from 2:00pm- 8:00pm. Their assistance will be vital in the kitchen's effort to raise awareness and support for our food programs and to launch a new Culinary Arts Training Program. Volunteers will help prepare food, serve guests and participate in clean up. Guests will be members of the Congregation, Food Pantry Clients, the community and public officials.

They are particularly looking for a professional chef who can donate their skills.

Our Lady of Sorrows Food Pantry serves the people who are in need of groceries and informs them about services they may not know they qualify for such as food stamps, Heap, or Verizon Lifeline. Our Lady of Sorrows is in need of volunteers who are fluent in Chinese, specifically Cantonese, Fujinese, and Mandarin.

The Bowery Mission addresses issues of hunger, homelessness, and need by providing food, clothing, shelter, showers, medical services, haircuts, and life-transforming residential recovery programs. Volunteers are needed to serve lunch on Saturday January 16th, 2010, or lunch on MLK Monday January 18th, 2010, or dinner on MLK Monday. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old and at least in 9th grade.

Iglesia Cristiana Shekinah

Iglesia Cristiana Shekinah is a church program that focuses on providing food to people in need, as well as referrals to rehabilitation centers, counseling, ESL classes, job placements, food stamp outreach, and health education. The weekly food pantry serves approximately 250 clients monthly. Volunteers are to needed to help build and paint two cabinets for food storage in the church basement. Volunteers will not need to bring any type of equipment since the project supervisor will provide them on site. The project will begin on MLK Monday January 18th, 2010.

Helping Hands of Ridgewood’s main initiative is their food pantry which provides emergency food to hungry individuals and families in the Greater Queens area. Helping Hands needs volunteers to help out with general tasks in the kitchen and food pantry as well as some assistance with marketing needs and financial management. The food pantry will be in operation MLK Monday January 18th, 2010 from noon till 5:00pm while the soup kitchen will serve from 5:00pm to 6:00pm. Volunteers are strongly encouraged to bring positive attitudes and smiling faces.

Todo X Jesus is a program designed for the community. They supply hot meals and a food pantry for laborers, homeless, and people in need around the neighborhood. Volunteers are needed to help distribute winter jackets on Saturday January 16, 2010 from 7:00am to 8:30am. Volunteers are also needed to serve soup in the soup kitchen.

Cathedral Community Cares is part of the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. Volunteers are needed Sunday, January 17th to assist with their Sunday Soup Kitchens. Tasks will include set-up, food preparation, food distribution, and clean up.

Lunch Volunteers: arrive 11am (shift 11am – 2pm)

On Monday, January 18th volunteers are also needed to help clean and organize food storage areas from 12 Noon – 6:00 pm.

St. John’s Bread and Life daily addresses the issues of hunger and poverty in Brooklyn and Queens. Every day, Bread and Life serves over one thousand meals to hungry New Yorkers. The volunteers would paint and engage in an intense clean-up of the facility including washing wall tiles, floor tiles, use buff machine, clean walls and vacuum.
